The SMRSS professional Allied Health Team is an instrumental part of the SMRSS’ workforce that supports our vision to ‘empower students towards independence thorough a command of language, mobility and social competency’. SMRSS employs an extensive team of occupational therapists, speech pathologists, a physiotherapist, a music therapist, social worker and therapy assistants who work with teachers, education support staff and student families to ensure all students are able to access their educational programs with the use of evidence based interventions. Through a multidisciplinary team approach the therapy team support classroom teams to develop students’ competency in communication, self-regulation, meeting individual sensory needs, mobility and independent living skills.
With a wide range of therapy programs, resources and knowledge of interventions, staff at SMRSS are well equipped to support students to become learning ready through:
- A school wide Sensory Motor Program
- A school wide Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) communication system
- A school wide Zones of Regulation teaching program
- Individualised Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems including Proloquo2go, Voice output communication devices, LAMP, and switches
- Individualised transfer, walking and mealtime profiles
- Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) feeding program
- Individualised physiotherapy programs and support
- Occupational Therapy, Speech and Physiotherapy based classroom resources for greater independence in school participation
- Regular professional development for education staff internal and external to SMRSS
